GHD hair irons are becoming more and more popular amongst women (and men) who crave super-straight sleek hair. It is not a cheap purchase – authentic GHDs cost around R1900, which is a high price to pay for straight hair. 

Because a GHD is so expensive, and in such demand, Chinese manufacturers (real GHDs are made in Korea) have stepped in and flooded the market with fake GHDs which look authentic but have been known to stop working after a month or two. According to GHD Hair, it is difficult to distinguish these fake GHDs from the real ones, as the products are identical in appearance – right down to the hologram and instruction DVD. But these fake ones are made from inferior materials and are said to be dangerous electronically.

The only way you can tell whether your GHD is the real thing is by verifying its hologram code (serial number) on the GHD Hair website. All real GHDs which are exported to South Africa from the UK have been registered online, so you will know straight away whether the straightener you have just purchased is the real thing or not. It is also important to be careful of GHDs being sold through classifieds such as Gumtree. According to an article on Security.co.za most of the cheap GHDs for sale are not real, even when the advert promises that they are the real deal. 

So before you embark on your expensive purchase, it is best to call the GHD head office in order to verify that the supplier you are purchasing from is GHD-approved. An investigation by the consumer watchdog group Trading Standards has revealed yet another overseas scam involving popular GHD hair straighteners. 

GHD hair straighteners are amongst the most popular straightening iron brands, and whilst they are very expensive compared to some other makes and models many people are prepared to pay the money in order to get their hands on these irons. However, the popularity of these GHDs has led to a massive counterfeit GHD hair straightener market, and many people that purchase these fakes thinking that they are getting a great deal on the real thing are actually buying fake irons that are not only nothing to do with GHD but are also potentially dangerous because they do not adhere to standards. 

A recent investigation was carried out by Trading Standards officers in Newport, Wales. As part of the investigation officers from the Newport city council-based Wales Scambuster team purchased two sets of hair straighteners that were advertised as GHDs from different websites that were based in China. Upon receipt it was found that both sets, which cost around sixty pounds each – almost half the price of the real ones – were counterfeit. They were also found to be potentially dangerous due to non-compliance with health and safety standards. 

One Trading Standards officer said: “Counterfeiters do not invest in research and development or care about complying with safety regulations. They set up production lines in temporary buildings, most often these days in developing countries, particularly China.”

 She added: “They are concerned only to make their counterfeits look enough like the real thing to make them worth selling, either to people who are innocently after a bargain, or to consumers who deliberately choose to buy fake goods. Either way, there is a very high price to pay, as counterfeits pose a serious threat which has already caused many deaths worldwide.”

GHD Executive Director Dr. Rebecca Weintraub and Case Writer Kileken ole-MoiYoi, recently returned from the seventh National Malaria Control Program (NMCP) Best Practice Sharing Workshop in Bamako, Mali. The NMCP workshop was co-chaired by Bob Snow, Professor of Tropical Public Health at the University of Oxford and head of the Malaria Public Health and Epidemiology Group in Nairobi Kenya, and Dr. Ali Abdullah, the program manager of the Zanzibar NMCP. Novartis AG has hosted the Best Practice Sharing Workshops as part of its Corporate Citizenship programs and as a stage for officials to share and learn from one another’s experiences in malaria control.

 The topics of discussion were directly related to the main challenges that NMCP managers face in their countries; the workshop focused on issues related to supply chain management of anti-malarials, appropriate diagnosis and treatment of malaria, home-based management, and the global subsidy for artemisinin-based combination therapy for treating malaria. Several NMCP managers presented updates on the progress made in each of their countries since the previous Best Practice Sharing Workshop and discussed challenges that have since arisen.

 The GHD hopes to work more closely with various NMCP managers and will complete a case study on the Zambian National Malaria Control program in the coming months. The GHD’s malaria program is developing a malaria teaching module that will focus on several of the challenges mentioned by NMCP directors to improve program management and the effective and timely delivery of malaria related health commodities and services.

In July 2009, international hair beauty brand, ghd, will be launching the search for an online video star. The chosen one will become the official ghd style diarist for the year and, through a series of video blogs, bestow upon stylistas across the country and across the globe the knowledge and tools to create the hottest looks for every season.

 Using her ghd IV styler and prescribed products from the ghd Thermodynamics range, the ghd style diarist will film the creation of four on-trend hairstyles. These short videos will be uploaded over four consecutive months, one per month, for urban angels to watch, learn and achieve hair styling perfection with ease.
